What is DBT?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy specifically designed to help individuals manage intense emotions, particularly those associated with borderline personality disorder (BPD). DBT combines cognitive-behavioral techniques with mindfulness and acceptance strategies to help individuals develop skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness.

DBT emphasizes balancing acceptance with change, teaching clients how to accept their emotions and experiences while also working to create positive change in their thoughts and behaviors. The therapy focuses on building coping mechanisms to manage difficult emotions, fostering greater self-awareness, and improving relationships. By promoting healthier ways of thinking, feeling, and interacting with others, DBT helps individuals improve their overall well-being and lead more fulfilling lives.
